CHAPTER TWENTY
FROM ASHES TO FIRE
ON MALDEC
A beam of light darted toward the planet Uranus in our solar system. As it slowed, it revealed the form of Sen Darâs ship. It continued past the planet and then disappeared into the depths of space in a trans-light-speed jump.
The ice rings of Saturn were glimmering in various subdued colors from reflected sunlight, while its twenty-one moons continued their separate journeys around their parent planet. The light beam slowed again, revealing Sen Darâs ship as it passed by the planet, and then it darted away again in another trans-light-jump.
Sen Darâs ship was soon speeding into view from deep space. It stopped to hover for a moment near the gas giant Jupiter before it darted back into space.
A beautiful blue-green jewel of a planet was silently revolving on its axis on its journey around our ancient sun. It was very similar to Earth but it had no moons and a slightly thicker, light-blue cloud cover faintly laced with pink. Sen Darâs ship approached and assumed an orbit around the planet.
Far away in the galaxy, Starlandâs flagship and eighteen additional cruisers still surrounded the Glonden-Yalgull fleet near the planet Sirus (6). The transparent sphere of violet light that had created the energy-dampening blanket around them was gone.
Kalemâs ship and four other Scout Interceptors sped into view from beyond Sirus (6) and headed toward Starlandâs flagship. They stopped to hover above the open launch bay closest to them and descended inside one by one.
Starland was standing in the bridge control room, slightly bent over, talking to Lieutenant Marin as Captain Kalem and Lieutenant Moreau walked into the room.
âAdmiral, Sen Dar escaped,â said Kalem, disappointed.
Despite this fact, Admiral Starland was smiling as he looked at his son and grabbed him by the shoulders with both hands.
âI thank The Ancient One for your safe return as well as Lieutenant Moreau,â he said and nodded at Moreau.
Lieutenant Moreau nodded back, appreciative for the Admiralâs show of concern.
âLook, weâre fine, Admiral,â remarked Kalem and he asked, âbut didnât you hear what I said? That monster, Sen Dar, escaped.â
âNot for long,â remarked Starland as he nodded a command to Lieutenant Marin.
Her nimble fingers touched several crystal controls and the main view screen displayed the galaxy in a three-dimensional image. An arrow led from the labeled Planet Sirus (6) down to a small-circled area between the center and the outer edge of one of the seven spiral arms of the galaxy. Lieutenant Marin pointed to the projection.
âThe final battle occurred here at Sirus (6),â she said as she touched another control.
The shipâs computer drew a small circle around a star near the outer edge of the same spiral arm of the galaxy, two-thirds of the way toward its end. Above the galaxy, an arrow from the word âMaldec,â labeled in clear luminous gold letters, led down to the circle. Marin touched several more crystal controls and the scene changed to an overview of Earthâs ancient solar system. A trajectory line that began from
